i think the sense that i got at mitt romney's event last night talking to some of his advisers and some of his aides was a little bit of unease, and i'm also hearing that there's a lot of e-mail going out and state republican officials, folks like sual, a former state party chair, really appreciapressurin state operatives saying let's get out the vote and make sure it's maximized. there's hints of anxiety on the romney side of how it will turn out. >> john, in terms of voters, there's been so much back and forth, you said that santorum may have the big momentum. he has spent a lot of time with the social issues. on the ground in michigan, how much were people paying attention to the snobbery and wanting to send your kids to four-year colleges and so forth. >> there's maybe a couple of levels of folks that pay attention to that. the core activist base of the party, you know, goes online and reads through and parses and understanding, you know, basically the message that santorum is trying delivery to them, and a lot of them agree with it. the people it's a problem for are those that are

a press conference last night. >> this is the same message i give to people, which is we have a very different approach, the president and i, between a government dominated society and a society driven by free people pursuing their dreams. i'm talking about the process of campaigns. typically i don't talk about process in speeches because i think candidates are wiser to talk about policy. >> how will the past eight weeks of abysmal message management and seemingly nonexistent strategy play out for candidate romney. from bloomberg view -- mitt romney lost the election. from david brooks, mr. romney your entitlement reform ideas are essential but when will the incompetence stop? we don't know, david brooks, but one thing remains certain, this avalanche of errors has made the upcoming presidential edebates which begin two weeks from today not nearly crucial but critical. romney must deliver a super human performance to not only reverse the downward spiral of his campaign but cat ta put him to where he might win an election that is seven weeks away. we hope rob portman is one heck of a s

george will writes romney is behind so on wednesday night it might be risky for romney not to take risks. which is a lot of risk in one sentence. do you think romg will go out there? i mean given his behavior thus far? >> historically the defirst debate is the first time a challenger has a chance to stance on stage on a level playing for field for a couple hours with the incumbent president and it's been the challenger's best debate. so just by showing up, you would think that romney's a slight favorite right now. we have seen obama recently in a higher position than he's been in all year, maybe higher than you would expect based on where the economy is. so i do think romney should have a tail wind at the same time the stuff we're mentioning where he also has tried to avoid articulating where his positions are on a lot of issues, a lot that is common sense but if you take positions further away from the center that damages you and he's not done a lot of running to the center at all in this campaign. that's unusual and he'll be proebds for more detail during the debate. >> the american pu

i guess i wondered was the romney campaign happy with christie's remarks last night? we saw -- we can play a little of the visual of mitt romney looking i will say uncomfortable, if not pained, during certain parts of christie's speech last night. what is the readout from where you are? >> well, of course the romney campaign did go through most of these speeches. they were perfectly aware of what all these folks were going to get up and say. you have to remember while this is mitt romney's convention, it is also the republican party's convention and the party as a whole has an interest in looking ahead and making sure they're setting up who they see as their rising stars to do well in future years. as one of our panelists was saying earlier, this was the time for christie to sort of set himself up for 2016, which was really unfortunate for him was having to follow ann romney. the whole hall was wrapped up in this personal story, thinking about mitt, their candidate and to have christie take the stage and start making references to the jersey shore was a little bit jar
